The Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Alhaji Sofo Azorka, a National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in connection with an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the third National Vice Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
Alhaji Azorka was arrested in Tamale on Wednesday, September 10, as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
In a statement, the Police revealed that he was granted bail after a caution statement was taken and has been directed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he will be formally arraigned before the court.
“The suspect has been cautioned and released on bail to report to the Regional Command on the said date,” the statement said.
The Police assured the public of a thorough investigation and urged calm as the case progresses.
“We wish to assure the public that thorough investigations will be conducted into the matter. The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in maintaining law and order. We entreat all parties and the general public to remain calm as we continue with our investigations and communicate further developments in due course,” the statement added.
