The National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended all boxing activities in Ghana following the tragic death of Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as ‘Bahubali.’
The NSA announced that investigations have begun to determine the circumstances that led to the pugilist’s passing.
‘Bahubali’ died 11 days after his fight with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12, where he was stopped in the eighth round.
Reports indicate he suffered internal bleeding, with his death confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday.
"It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritize the safety, health and welfare of athletes," the NSA said in a press release.
"The NSA and the Sports Ministry therefore calls on all stakeholders - promoters, coaches, officials, athletes, supporters and the media - to fully respect this directive."
Bahubali’s passing is the the second tragedy in Ghanaian boxing this year, following the death of Gabriel Aluwasegun in April.
In response, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has vowed to ensure proper medical care for boxers after bouts.
