Bibiani GoldStars’ maiden CAF Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak after suffering a crushing 5-0 defeat to Algerian giants JS Kabylie in Tizi Ouzou on Sunday.
Already trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Accra, the Ghana Premier League champions faced an uphill task but endured a nightmare start when goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi turned the ball into his own net just seven minutes into the game.
Ryad Boudebouz doubled Kabylie’s advantage in the 29th minute before Mehdi Merghem made it 3-0 midway through the second half.
Things went from bad to worse for GoldStars as defender Emmanuel Ankrah was sent off in the 60th minute, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
Kabylie capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Lahlou Akhrib scoring four minutes later before Oualid Maliki sealed the emphatic win in stoppage time.
The 7-0 aggregate defeat confirmed GoldStars’ exit from the preliminary round, bringing an end to their continental hopes.
JS Kabylie progress to the next stage, while the Ghanaian champions must now turn their attention back to defending their title in the Ghana Premier League.
