The Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Isaac Boadi, has called for the establishment of a scholarship scheme for girls in rural communities in honour of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
Speaking on the AM Show, Prof. Boadi said the late Mrs Rawlings dedicated much of her public life to championing women’s empowerment and should be remembered in a way that directly supports young girls who face obstacles in accessing quality education.
“We should be able to set up, for me, because I have an educational background, a scholarship for rural girls,” he said. “This administration must set up a scholarship for rural girls. That should be something we can use to honour her legacy.
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, known for her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement, played a significant role in advancing women’s rights, economic empowerment and educational opportunities across Ghana.
Her initiatives supported thousands of market women, farmers, and young girls in underserved communities.
Prof. Boadi noted that while national recognition and state honours are expected, there must also be a practical and lasting impact. He emphasised that a scholarship fund would reflect the values and advocacy the former First Lady championed throughout her life.
The call comes as the country continues to mourn her passing, with tributes flowing from political figures, civil society, and international partners.
Prof. Boadi added that institutionalising her legacy through education would ensure “future generations understand not just who she was, but what she stood for.”
Such an initiative, he said, would become a meaningful symbol of continuity in the national push for gender equality.
