Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ahafo Region successfully contained a fire outbreak at the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Friday morning, averting what could have been a major disaster.
According to a statement from the Regional Public Relations Office, the Kukuom Fire Station received a distress call at about 7:12 a.m. and quickly dispatched a team to the scene, arriving at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Reinforcements from the Goaso Municipal Fire Station joined the operation shortly after, helping to bring the blaze under control by 8:45 a.m. The flames were fully extinguished by 10:26 a.m.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire started in one of the rooms on the first floor of a one-story dormitory block before spreading to six adjoining rooms.
The inferno destroyed the roof, ceiling, furniture, books, beds, and other personal belongings of students. Two fire extinguishers located on the affected floor also exploded during the incident. However, no injuries or casualties were reported.
Officials from the GNFS say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The timely intervention by the Kukuom and Goaso fire crews was instrumental in preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the campus.
The incident has since reignited calls for enhanced fire safety measures and regular inspections in educational institutions across the region.
