The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed the Clerk to Parliament to deduct GH¢1,000 from the November salaries of all 276 Members of Parliament to support the Breast Society of Ghana in its fight against breast cancer.
The Speaker announced the initiative during proceedings on Friday, explaining that the collective contribution would be topped up personally by his office to bring the total amount to GH¢300,000.
“The Office will deduct one thousand Ghana cedis from each member’s salary for the month of November to be dedicated to the fight that we are all engaged in, the Cancer Awareness Month,” Speaker Bagbin stated.
He added that the total amount raised from MPs’ deductions, GH¢276,000, would be complemented by an additional contribution from him to reach GH¢300,000.
The funds, he said, would be presented to the Breast Society of Ghana to support its ongoing awareness, screening, and treatment campaigns.
The Speaker underscored the importance of the gesture, noting the devastating impact breast cancer continues to have on women and families across the country.
“This is a very important matter. I have seen and witnessed how devastating breast cancer is to our women. I think that if we had had some of these statements earlier on, we could have done more,” he said.
The Speaker’s directive comes as part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to promote early detection, education, and support for patients battling the disease.
