President John Mahama has announced that the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, will make budgetary allocations to support the feasibility studies and design phase of the government’s proposed Green City project.
Addressing guests at the sod-cutting ceremony for the multi-purpose solar energy project at the Dawa Industrial Park in Agotor on Thursday, 6th November, President Mahama explained that the Green City, expected to be developed over 20 years in four phases, with the first phase expected to begin before the end of 2028, will incorporate modern infrastructure such as an advanced drainage network, upgraded sanitation facilities, structured commercial zones, and well-regulated markets.
He cautioned that the development will not accommodate the construction of makeshift structures or kiosks, emphasising the government’s commitment to ensuring a well-planned urban environment.
“This would be a new city that would attract investment, it will attract tourism, it will be a smart city, it will have a modern drainage system, it will have good sanitation, and there will be no kiosks.”
“Everything that is happening here is being integrated into the green digital city that we have envisioned for our dear nation, Ghana. The feasibility study and the design for this city will begin by the end of this year, and the Ministry of Finance is already making budgetary provision for the designs and feasibility studies,” he said.
The president also explained that the proposed Green City will stretch from the Saglemi Housing Estate through the Bondase Military Range, linking the Volta and Eastern Regions.
“Now, all that is happening here is not in isolation because the city stretches from here, Dawa Industrial Park, including the Saglemi Housing Estate, through Bondase Military Range into the Volta and Eastern regions,” he stated.
