The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has expressed concern over the conduct of some commercial drivers who charge inconsistent fares on the same routes, offering lower prices in the morning and higher rates in the evening.
He spoke at the launch of “Operation Disaster-Free Christmas” in Accra, an initiative designed to strengthen emergency response and ensure a safe festive season for all.
Describing the practice as unfair to commuters, he warned that drivers who ignore agreed-upon fares after the engagement will face strict legal consequences.
“Some of our drivers charge different fees in the morning, and in the evening they charge another set of fees, and it's a big worry,” he said.
“I can assure you, after this meeting, any driver who does not listen to what we say here and goes out to charge more than they are supposed to take will be sent to the sanitation court. We will take you there and make sure we remand you,” he cautioned.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly says its enforcement measures, together with broader safety initiatives being rolled out ahead of the festive season, aim to ensure a safe, orderly, and secure Christmas for residents and visitors.
