The Accra-Kumasi Highway was the scene of a fatal accident and subsequent vehicular fire on Tuesday, November 19, 2025, resulting in one confirmed fatality and the total destruction of a commercial vehicle.
The incident occurred near Apadwa, highlighting persistent safety concerns on one of the busiest inter-regional routes.
The accident involved a Hyundai Starex vehicle registered GX 6981-21, which was travelling southbound from Kumasi toward Accra.
According to statements provided by eyewitnesses at the scene, the tragic chain of events unfolded when the Hyundai Starex attempted a risky overtaking manoeuvre.
The driver lost control, resulting in the following catastrophic sequence:
- The vehicle knocked down and killed a female pedestrian.
- The vehicle then veered sharply off the road.
- It crashed violently by the roadside, which immediately triggered a severe fire outbreak .
The Suhum Fire Station received the distress call regarding the vehicular fire at 0856 hrs (8:56 AM). A specialized crew, led by STNO II Antwi Forson, responded swiftly, arriving at the crash site at 0907 hrs (9:07 AM), demonstrating a rapid response time of only 11 minutes.
Upon arrival, the team found the Hyundai Starex fully engulfed in flames.
