Parliament has approved reports on allocations from the 2026 Budget despite chaotic scenes that erupted earlier in the chamber following protests by the Minority over the declaration of the Kpandai seat as vacant.
The Majority succeeded in adopting the report moments after tension peaked, with members of the Minority abandoning their seats and massing in the centre of the floor in a chant-filled protest that briefly led to a scuffle.
The uproar forced parliamentary marshals to intervene as MPs from both sides shouted over one another, drowning out proceedings and temporarily stalling the House.
But despite the disorder, the Majority pushed through with the adoption of the budget allocation report, a key step in the approval process of the 2026 fiscal policy.
The Minority maintained that until the Kpandai issue is resolved, they will continue to obstruct government business.
They insist the Speaker acted prematurely in directing communication to the Electoral Commission regarding the seat, despite ongoing legal processes at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
After the contentious approval, the Speaker adjourned the House, bringing an end to a dramatic sitting marked by accusations, protests and strong exchanges between the two sides.
The adjournment leaves lingering uncertainty about how Parliament will navigate the next stages of the budget approval process if the standoff over the Kpandai seat persists.
After the sitting, First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, told JoyNews that the manner in which the reports were approved was shameful.
For him, there was no government business conducted as far as the minority is concerned.
The Member of Parliament for Tolon added that when the house resumes on Wednesday, they will advise themselves going forward.
