As the clock ticked towards midnight on Wednesday, December 31, churches across Ghana, particularly in the Ablekuma Agape area of Accra, transformed into vibrant sanctuaries of reflection, thanksgiving, and exuberant celebration.
Watchnight services, a cherished tradition blending fervent prayer with joyful worship, drew hundreds as congregants reflected on the trials and triumphs of 2025 while stepping boldly into 2026 with hope anchored in faith.

Inside Ablekuma Agape, the Church of Pentecost- Emmanuel Assembly pulsed with energy. Worshippers arrived in their finest white attire, women in colourful headscarves and flowing dresses, men in sharp white shirts, filling the chairs to overflowing.

The air hummed with anticipation as the service unfolded. Powerful prayers echoed through the hall, hands raised in supplication, voices uniting in thanksgiving for God's mercies through the past year. Soon, the atmosphere shifted to unbridled joy.
Congregants broke into spirited singing, clapping rhythms that shook the rafters, and dancing that swept through the aisles. Testimonies flowed freely – stories of healing and breakthrough that elicited reactions of "Eei!" and "God is good!"

Nearby, at Gethsemane Presbyterian Church, the atmosphere was hotter than fire. Prayers rose fervently, voices lifted together in a passionate cry for divine intervention.
Praise broke forth in soulful Ga and Twi hymns, while testimonies overflowed; accounts of miraculous healings, financial breakthroughs, and restored families.

The atmosphere swelled with emotion, drawing tears, jubilant shouts of “Amen! and Hallelujah!", with waves of joyful dancing. The night peaked with a powerful sermon from the Catechist, stirring every soul with messages of hope, repentance and God's unfailing promises for the new year.

A supporting Presiding Elder, Atta Korankye, at the church of Pentecost- Emmanuel Assembly, addressed the congregation with a stirring message. "My dear brothers and sisters, as we cross into 2026 let us carry a message of holiness, love and action," he declared.

"We expect breakthroughs in health, finances and families. But above all, we pray that God guides our President and his ministers wisely, grant them discernment to lead with integrity, justice and fear of the Lord, steering Ghana towards peace and progress."

Even occasional churchgoers could not miss this night. Cynthia Asamoah, a trader, said: "Market life keeps me busy, no Sunday-Sunday church, but 31st night? I must come thank Baba God for life and pray for a better 2026. I'm not regular, but crossover without prayer? Impossible! Starting the year with God brings hope – the dancing and testimonies remind me He's still in control.

The services were a tapestry of prayer, thanksgiving, reflection and pure joy, a reminder of why Ghanaians flock to church on this night, seeking divine protection at the spiritual threshold of a new year.
