Government has announced plans to construct a 1,500-seater theatre in Kumasi, with completion expected within the next two to three years.
The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, made the disclosure on Thursday, January 15, stating that the project has been included in the 2026 national budget, following approval by President John Mahama.
He described the decision as a response to years of appeals for a major performing arts facility in the Ashanti Regional capital.
Speaking at a news conference, the Mayor revealed that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has released land for the development, while officials from the Presidency have already visited and assessed the proposed sites for the project.
He said the theatre will be equipped with modern auxiliary facilities, including accommodation, a restaurant, and a recording studio, and will be the largest theatre facility in the country when completed.
Mr Ofori Agyemang Boadi also disclosed that the government is planning an ultramodern recreational centre in Kumasi, which will feature a restaurant and other leisure amenities to enhance the city’s social and cultural landscape.
