Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with China, as she received the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, who paid a farewell visit at the end of his tenure.
In a post on Tuesday, January 20, the Vice President disclosed that the meeting provided an opportunity to review the depth of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade and development.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Ambassador Tong highlighted that bilateral trade between Ghana and China has reached a record US$15 billion, underscoring the growing economic ties between the two nations.
The Vice President expressed appreciation to the outgoing envoy for his dedicated service and significant contributions to Ghana–China relations.

She cited key achievements during his tenure, including the zero-tariff agreement and his role in securing two major grants for Ghana, the construction of the Aflao Market and the Catholic Science and Technology University in Damongo.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also encouraged Ambassador Tong to continue carrying Ghana with him as he moves on to the next stage of his diplomatic career, while reaffirming Ghana’s strong interest in expanding both trade relations and people-to-people exchanges with China.

She further conveyed Ghana’s appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to President John Mahama during his recent visit to China, noting that the visit resulted in the development of a new blueprint for future engagements between the two countries.
