Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has downplayed concerns about the outspoken nature of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, arguing that his temperament is not a disqualifying factor.
Mr Agyapong, often labelled a “no-nonsense” politician, has attracted criticism within and outside the party for his fiery style and readiness to respond sharply when challenged.
However, Dr Sarpong says such traits should be viewed in context and balanced against Mr Agyapong’s broader strengths.
“I looked at the overall picture, and his positives outweighed the negatives,” Dr Sarpong said in an interview with Channel One TV.
“People focus on the way he speaks, but for me, that can be managed so that the good in him can be harnessed for the benefit of the country.”
He also drew attention to Mr Agyapong’s public record, noting that despite his blunt style, he has not been associated with corruption scandals.
“Have you ever heard that he has been tagged with corruption?” Dr Sarpong asked.
“If he sometimes insults people, that is one aspect, but have you considered the totality of his personality?”
According to Dr Sarpong, closer engagement with the NPP aspirant had revealed a more restrained and humble character, particularly in recent months.
“I got closer to him and saw how humble he is. He is now behaving in a more presidential manner,” he said.
“Let us be honest, in the last six months, have you heard anything negative about him? This is not pretence.”
He urged party delegates to adopt a broader assessment of leadership qualities as they make their choice.
“Whatever he is, don’t judge him on one variable,” Dr Sarpong added. “Judge him on the totality of the variables.”
