Antoine Semenyo has firmly announced his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, netting his first Premier League goal for Manchester City in a clinical 2–0 dismantling of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
In what was a must-win Round 23 fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side, the Ghanaian international proved to be the clinical edge City required to keep their title defence breathing.
The victory narrows the gap at the summit of the table to just four points, piling the pressure on league leaders Arsenal ahead of their high-stakes Sunday showdown with Manchester United.
City, facing a Wolves side anchored to the bottom of the table, wasted no time asserting their dominance. It took only six minutes for the deadlock to be broken by Egypt’s Omar Marmoush.
Returning from a deep run in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Marmoush showed no signs of fatigue, latching onto a slick passing sequence to fire the hosts ahead.
While Wolves attempted to sit deep and absorb the sky-blue waves of attack, their resistance crumbled in the dying seconds of the first half.
In the 45th minute, Semenyo—the £50 million summer signing from AFC Bournemouth—pounced on a loose ball in the box to double the advantage.
The goal was a milestone for the 26-year-old, marking his first Premier League strike in a Manchester City shirt.
While he had previously teased the Etihad faithful with goals in the FA Cup against Exeter City and the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United, this league goal solidifies his role in Guardiola’s rotation.
Since his high-profile move, the Black Stars forward has been nothing short of efficient. His goal on Saturday brings his tally to an impressive three goals in just four appearances across all competitions.
