A new poll conducted by Pan-African civil society organisation Sanity Africa suggests that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is on course to secure the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position, with 52 per cent of delegate support.
The survey, conducted between December 2025 and January 2026 and released on Monday, January 26, sought to gauge the voting intentions of NPP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, disaggregating results by gender, religion, age, and employment status.
Overall, Mr Agyapong emerged as the frontrunner with 52 per cent support, followed by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on 40 per cent.
Dr Bryan Acheampong garnered 7 per cent, while Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong received 0.7 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively.
Gender Divide
The poll revealed a gendered voting pattern. Among male delegates, Dr Bawumia led with 48.9 per cent compared to Agyapong’s 42.4 per cent. Conversely, Agyapong commanded overwhelming support among female delegates, securing 57.8 per cent against Dr Bawumia’s 37.1 per cent.
Influence of Religion
Religion also influenced delegate preferences. Over half of Muslim respondents cited religion as an important factor, with 52.8 per cent favouring Dr Bawumia and 43.1 per cent backing Agyapong.
Among Christian delegates, a majority preferred Agyapong, with 61.6 per cent indicating that shared faith would shape their choice. Dr Adutwum, described as an elder in a church, ranked third among Christian voters, followed by Dr Acheampong and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong.
Age Trends
The survey found age-based differences in support. Dr Bawumia resonated more with middle-aged (40–55 years) and older delegates (55+), leading Mr Agyapong by three and nearly ten percentage points respectively.
Among delegates under 40, however, Agyapong enjoyed commanding support, securing 63 per cent of votes compared to Dr Bawumia’s 33.5 per cent.
Employment Status
Employment status also shaped voting intentions. Delegates in full-time employment preferred Dr Bawumia (53.8 per cent) over Agyapong (41.9 per cent).
In contrast, self-employed delegates, including traders, market women, artisans, and farmers, overwhelmingly backed Agyapong at 55.5 per cent. Students and unemployed delegates also favoured Agyapong, with 58.9 per cent and 52.8 per cent support respectively.
