Former President Nana Akufo-Addo was in a jubilant mood on Saturday, January 31, as former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was officially declared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
As he mounted the stage to deliver his remarks, Nana Akufo-Addo was seen singing along to the popular Ghanaian celebratory anthem, “Oye”, joining party supporters in a spontaneous display of joy and solidarity.
The song expresses joy and gratitude, declaring “I have heard good news, that Jesus is good.”
His impromptu performance captured the excitement and relief of party supporters following Dr Bawumia’s decisive victory in the party's presidential primaries.
Dr Bawumia won the primaries with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent of the valid ballots cast, ahead of four other aspirants: former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The celebratory scene at the headquarters was filled with party executives, Members of Parliament, and thousands of supporters who had gathered to witness the formal declaration of Dr Bawumia as the NPP’s candidate for the next general elections.
