The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised the Minority Whips, describing them as the backbone of his leadership and critical to the effective functioning of the caucus in opposition.
He said the demands of leading the Minority can be overwhelming, making a strong and coordinated whip team indispensable.
“In opposition you can be overwhelmed because when you are Minority Leader, the most powerful person, your right-hand man who gets you going, is your Chief Whip,” he stated.
He singled out Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, for special commendation.
“Annoh has done super in terms of his organisation. He and his team,” Mr Afenyo-Markin noted, highlighting his organisational strength and leadership.
He also commended Habib Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Chief Whip, describing him as a strong advocate who has grown into the role.
“Habib came in first as a deputy whip and went through grooming. For some time, I allowed him to take up procedural issues and you realise that he is very strong in terms of advocacy,” he said.
The Minority Leader further highlighted the contribution of Jerry Ahmed Shaib, Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, calling him a dependable backup within the leadership structure.
“The three of them have become my anchormen. Without them you cannot function as a Minority Leader. You need a strong whip who understands. He is like your national security advisor,” he added.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, noting that the effectiveness of the Minority in holding government accountable depends heavily on a coordinated and disciplined whip system grounded in parliamentary procedure and strategy.
