Government has announced sweeping security measures following the deadly terrorist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso that left eight people dead and others injured.

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, disclosed the interventions when he led a delegation from the Ministry of Defence to brief the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs and National Security.

He described the attack as deeply troubling and assured Parliament that immediate and long-term steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

Among the key measures is the activation of "two Forward Operating Bases in Jirapa and Hamile to reinforce security presence along Ghana’s northern frontier".

The bases, he said, are "ready and will soon be fully operational to support rapid response and sustained patrols in vulnerable border communities."

Surveillance along critical border corridors has also been intensified, with security agencies increasing monitoring and intelligence-gathering operations to detect and deter potential threats.

Beyond domestic measures, the government has approved the deployment of Defence Attachés to six high-risk countries — Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran and Libya — to enhance intelligence coordination and strengthen protection for Ghanaians living and working abroad.

Mr Genfi further revealed that Ghana is working closely with Burkinabe authorities to improve security arrangements for Ghanaian traders through targeted training programmes focused on escort operations.

Selected security personnel will also undergo specialised academic and intelligence-based training at dedicated centres as part of a broader strategy to build capacity in counterterrorism and cross-border protection.

He stressed that safeguarding Ghanaian lives, whether within the country or beyond its borders, remains a top priority for the government amid rising extremist activity in parts of the sub-region.

The delegation accompanying the Deputy Minister included the Chief Director of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Emmanuel Kartey; Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Livinus Bessing; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Stephen Woseadzipko Kweku Parbey; Director of Public Relations, Colonel Ernestina Assan; and Director of Finance and Administration, Madam Adwoa Assan.
