The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu, has distributed poultry birds to farmers in the constituency under the government’s "Nkoko Nkitinkiti" initiative, aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s poultry industry and boosting local food production.

The programme forms part of the Feed Ghana Programme, a national intervention designed to strengthen agricultural productivity, create employment opportunities, and reduce the country’s dependence on imported frozen chicken.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative, launched in late 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to distribute more than three million birds and seven million chicks to households and poultry farmers across the country while providing feed, technical training, and other forms of support.

At a brief ceremony in Dome-Kwabenya, Mrs. Akurugu presented the birds to selected poultry farmers, urging beneficiaries to take full advantage of the programme to expand their poultry farms and contribute to Ghana’s food security.

She noted that the initiative is a major step toward empowering local farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Mrs. Akurugu said the programme demonstrates the government’s commitment to reviving the poultry industry and creating sustainable livelihoods.

“The Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme is a game changer for our farmers. It is not only about distributing birds but about empowering people with the resources and support they need to produce locally,” she said.

She added that the initiative will help reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken while improving income levels for poultry farmers.

“For far too long, Ghana has depended heavily on imported frozen chicken. With initiatives like this, we are supporting our farmers to produce more locally, create jobs, and strengthen our economy,” she stated.

Some beneficiary farmers expressed appreciation to the government and the Member of Parliament for extending the programme to the constituency, saying the birds would help them expand their poultry operations.

Mrs. Akurugu assured farmers of continued support and encouraged more residents to venture into poultry farming as part of efforts to strengthen food production and economic opportunities within the constituency.
