Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has supported the organisation of the annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup.
The competition will kick off on Monday, March 23, at the Madina AstroTurf.
The community football gala brings together youth from Zongo communities, and it has become a consistent feature on the calendar of activities to mark the end of Ramadan since 2015.
This year's edition comes off tomorrow at the Madina Astro Turf with 16 Zongo communities participating, and in a post on the official Facebook page of the tournament, Dr. Bawumia was commended by organisers for what they described as his "consistent support" financial towards the successful organisation of the tournament.
"We wish to express our utmost gratitude to former Vice President, H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for coming through to support us, once again. His consistent support towards the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup over the years, has contributed immensely to bringing youth of our Zongo communities together through football, " the post read, accompanied by a picture of the former Vice President with some past winners of the competition.

Over the past 10 years, Dr. Bawumia has been a committed supporter of the annual event, and has also hosted some of the winning communities.
In 2024, he rewarded the winners, Ashaiman, with GHC 20,000, and also facilitated the construction of an astro turf for Ashaiman, which started before he left office.
Meanwhile, this year's edition, which is the 11th, kicks off today at the Madina Astro Turf in Accra.
Sixteen (16) Zongo communities will be participating in the and highly competitive tournament, which only six communities out of the nearly 40 which have participated in the tournament before , have won it.
Ashaiman are record winners, having won it three times, followed by Kasoa who have won it twice. Mamobi, Nima, Madina and Adabraka have won it once.
Nsawam Zongo and Sabon Zongo from Accra, are scheduled to open the 2026 edition at 9:00am today, before other exciting pairings.
The grand finale is expected to be played later in the evening with a host of fans and dignitaries expected to grace it
