A police officer has died in a crash involving a police Rhino Kia mini truck on the Somanya–Adukrom highway, renewing calls for urgent safety measures on the notorious Aseseso hill.

The accident occurred on March 21, 2026, when the vehicle, carrying three male occupants, reportedly developed a gear lever fault while descending the steep hill.

A statement from the Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service said personnel from the Kpong Municipal Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call and rescued two civilians from the wreckage before conveying them to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital for treatment.

The police driver was confirmed dead after the crash.

Mr Emmanuel Ashiabi, the Administrator of the Yilo Krobo District Hospital, told the Ghana News Agency, that the two injured civilians, aged 53 and 20, received treatment and were later discharged.

He said the prompt response by the fire service ensured the injured victims received timely medical attention.

However, the incident has once again drawn attention to the dangerous nature of the Aseseso hill, which had recorded multiple fatal crashes over the years.

Residents and frequent road users had long appealed for improved safety interventions and stricter vehicle maintenance checks, to curb rising accidents along the stretch.

In March 2025, two people died, and several students were injured when a bus from Ben Kunadu SDA School crashed between Adukrom and Somanya.

Again, in October 2025, a truck carrying pharmaceutical products overturned on the same road, spilling its load, while earlier, in June 2024, the staff of Koforidua SHTS were involved in another deadly crash at the location.

The latest incident has intensified public pressure on authorities to implement stronger safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
