The Greater Accra Region is set for a major clean-up exercise on Friday as the government begins the implementation of a post-flood mitigation plan aimed at reducing the risk of further flooding in affected communities.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday ahead of the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, says the exercise, dubbed “Green Heart”, will serve as the region’s dedicated sanitation and clean-up campaign under the broader national response to the recent floods.

Her comments come after the government declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as national general cleaning days in the seven regions affected by the recent flooding, as part of efforts to clear drains and improve environmental sanitation ahead of expected heavy rains.

Madam Ocloo said the exercise is intended not only to clear public spaces and waterways, but also to send a strong signal that the government is taking decisive action to improve sanitation and protect lives.

“Tomorrow’s exercise is our dedicated purification and clean-up exercise called Green Heart,” she said, explaining that the campaign is designed to encourage residents to take ownership of their environment while complementing the government’s flood prevention efforts.

She disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council has already held meetings with key stakeholders, including Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, traditional authorities, NADMO, environmental health officials and coordinating directors, to prepare a roadmap for the exercise.

According to her, a reconnaissance exercise was also conducted across designated sites to assess conditions on the ground and address logistical needs ahead of the clean-up.

“We had a meeting with all the stakeholders involved. We were able to meet some traditional rulers, NADMO, the environmental protection office and all the coordinating directors to have a roadmap.

“We visited all the sites and looked at some of the logistics. So as I’m speaking now, all the steps are in place, and we are prepared for the exercise,” she said.

Madam Ocloo said all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region have been assigned specific roles, while an itinerary has also been prepared for institutions and individuals who want to participate in the campaign.

She noted that details of the clean-up points and assembly arrangements would be shared on social media platforms to allow volunteers and organisations to join the exercise in their respective localities.

The minister urged residents to take part in the campaign within their own communities instead of travelling across the city to participate elsewhere, in order to make the exercise more effective and better coordinated.

“What we are advising is that if you are in Madina, make sure you join the Madina clean-up. Don’t travel from one area to another. We want every district and community to take responsibility for its own space,” she said.

The two-day national clean-up exercise forms part of measures adopted by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee following the recent floods that affected parts of the country and caused widespread destruction.
