The Eastern South Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the National Operations Directorate, has arrested 258 suspects in connection with the violent disturbances that broke out at Nsawam–Adoagyiri on July 7.
The latest violence is believed to be a renewed clash involving youth groups, following similar disturbances in the area last year.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that some of the youth involved in the violence allegedly looted shops, set fire to an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer, vandalised the Oko Anadwo Palace and an astroturf facility, and robbed mobile money vendors, causing fear and panic among residents.
In a press release, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Regional Police Command, Superintendent David Fianko-Okyere, said the arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation.
He added that the police retrieved two locally manufactured firearms, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, suspected tramadol and Viagra tablets, as well as several mobile phones believed to be relevant to the investigations.
The police said the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with investigations.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured residents that adequate security measures remain in place to protect lives and property in the municipality.
It has also appealed to members of the public to volunteer any information that could support ongoing investigations by reporting to the nearest police station.
The Command further urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain law-abiding and refrain from acts that threaten public peace, security and social order.
