President John Dramani Mahama has held separate talks with the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, and the Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), Joy Phumaphi, on strengthening public health systems across Africa.
The meeting, held on Tuesday July 21, on the sidelines of the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health in Accra, focused on efforts to improve the continent's health systems and reduce dependence on external support.
President Mahama outlined what he described as the Accra Reset, an initiative aimed at enabling African countries to produce their own vaccines, strengthen resilient health systems and advance greater self-reliance in healthcare.

He also highlighted progress on Ghana's Free Primary Healthcare programme, which he said provides free basic healthcare services at Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds and polyclinics without requiring a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.
According to the President, the initiative forms part of efforts to accelerate Ghana's progress towards universal health coverage.

During the discussions, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Ms commended President Mahama's efforts to promote what she described as health sovereignty for Ghana, Africa and the Global South.
