The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described the party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration as a legitimate expression of concern over what it believes is the selective application of justice and the alleged targeting of opposition members by state institutions.
According to him, the protest was organised to draw national attention to issues the party considers critical to the protection of the rule of law, fairness and the independence of state investigative bodies.
Mr Ahiagbah maintained that the NPP was not opposed to the work of institutions such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), but insisted that they must carry out their constitutional responsibilities impartially and professionally.
He also appealed to EOCO's Executive Director, Raymond Archer, to ensure that investigations are conducted without bias and in a manner that inspires public confidence.
Speaking to Channel One TV during Thursday's demonstration, Mr Ahiagbah said: "Raymond Archer is doing his work, but he must do it professionally. We don't have any intention of gagging state institutions. What we are saying is that they must do their work professionally and nobody will complain if they do their work professionally.
"What is being done today may be repeated tomorrow if they are not mindful. What we need is that everyone should be treated fairly, and we are not asking for special treatment, so the selectivity must stop. We are all Ghanaians and the NDC must govern the country for the benefit of all Ghanaians."
The "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration attracted hundreds of NPP supporters, party executives and sympathisers, who marched through the principal streets of Accra after assembling at the forecourt of the Supreme Court.
The protesters are expected to present petitions to the judiciary and the Presidency as part of their demands for what they describe as greater fairness and respect for democratic principles.
