The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to all shop owners and occupiers within the metropolis who have erected unauthorized canopies, awnings, and sheds at the frontage of their premises to remove them immediately.

In a public notice dated Monday, August 10, 2026, and signed by the Public Relations Unit of KMA, the Assembly said the unauthorized structures obstruct pedestrian movement, encroach on public spaces and road reserves, and impede emergency access.

According to KMA, the structures also “create environmental and safety hazards, and detract the orderly development and appearance of the Metropolis.”

The Assembly has directed affected persons to voluntarily remove all unauthorized canopies and associated structures from the frontage of their shops and restore the affected areas to their original condition within fourteen (14) days from the date of the notice.

“Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the Assembly to remove the offending structures without further notice,” the statement warned.

KMA further stated that the cost of any forced removal shall be borne by the owners or occupiers of the shops. Offenders may also be liable to prosecution in accordance with applicable laws and regulations governing physical planning and development control.

The Assembly is urging all affected persons to cooperate with authorities to ensure “a safe, accessible, clean, and orderly urban environment.”

The notice comes amid ongoing efforts by KMA to decongest Kumasi’s central business district and improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow in the Garden City.
