Former Environment Minister Dr Kwaku Afriyie has told Parliament the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Authority Henry Kwabena Kokofu is working assiduously to secure World Bank funds for the Akosombo Dam spillage victims.
MPs from the affected constituencies have been lamenting the lack of action from government with many victims still living in tents and waiting for government to resettle and compensate them.
Speaking in Parliament, the former Minister explained that Henry Kwabena Kokofu will soon deposit Ghana's papers to secure funding.
"As I speak to you now, the Akosombo Spillage for example, we believe that we can qualify under loss and damage and the EPA under Executive Director Kokofu is working hard so that we can deposit our papers, the status of the loss and damage with the World Bank and all the rules and regulations that will lead to the disbursement is now being discussed. We believe that we can qualify", he said.
Parliament is currently considering the Environmental Protect Bill which will address environmental challenges and give the Environmental Protection Authority more powers to deal with emerging environmental issues.
The bill has now progressed through the second reading stage.
