President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to show democratic maturity in the upcoming December 7 elections.
He noted that, over the past thirty years, under the Fourth Republican Constitution, Ghana had established a strong commitment to the rule of law, successfully conducting eight consecutive elections since 1992.
“This will be the ninth successive time that we have been discharging this sacred duty of voting to choose our leaders since the onset of the Fourth Republic,” the President said of the 2024 General Election.
In a national address on Friday evening, President Akufo-Addo encouraged citizens to vote peacefully and with dignity in the upcoming elections.
“We should never forget that the flame of freedom needs to be protected and constantly refueled,” he advised, urging the electorate to strictly abide by the electoral laws.
The President said elections were a fundamental aspect of democracy and that it was the responsibility of eligible voters to participate in large numbers.
He urged the public to have confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC), assuring that he was confident the Commission would carry out its duties effectively.
“We have good reason to be proud of the EC.
“Today, it is a much more transparent and efficient institution that we are all ready to entrust to deliver free, transparent and fair elections, that will truly reflect the will of the people,” he noted.
The President encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate with electoral officials to ensure a transparent process.
He expressed optimism that the elections would take place in a peaceful environment, free from intimidation and violence, adding that the security agencies were adequately prepared for their roles.
“Please, remember that we have a reputation to protect,” he said of Ghana’s status as the beacon of democratic development in the West African sub-Region.
