The chiefs and elders of Akutuase in the Amantena Electoral Area of the Ashanti Region have opposed the introduction of mining activities on their land, warning that such operations would cause environmental and social damage to their communities.
Speaking to Adom News, the Akutuasehene, Nana Kofi Asare Bediako, reiterated the community’s unwavering stance against mining in the Amantenaman enclave.
He stressed that the proposed activities threaten the very foundations of their livelihoods.
“We do not want any mining activities to happen on our land,” he declared, underscoring the potential destruction the operations could unleash across the area.
Nana Bediako said the community fears that their water bodies, crucial for household use, farming, and daily survival, would be contaminated if mining proceeds.
Beyond the environmental risks, the chief also expressed concern about the broader social implications. He warned that mining activities could expose the community, particularly the youth, to vulnerabilities such as increased teenage pregnancies and other harmful social consequences.
Nana Kofi Asare Bediako and his council have therefore called on authorities to respect their position and prioritise the long-term wellbeing of the people of Akutuase.
