The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Manhyia South has dispelled the notion of apathy among voters in the 2024 election, claiming it only exists in isolated cases.
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah says his visits to the electorate have revealed many are eager to cast their ballots on December 7.
He is confident the Free Senior High School policy rolled out by the government will work magic for the NPP.
“I have been to over sixty percent of homes in this constituency and I continue to visit. I am telling you that the people are overwhelmingly ready to vote for the NPP. Initially, the impression I had was that there was apathy on the grounds but trust me it is not so”, he said.
He added, “People are saying that they are going to vote because of the Free SHS. I am telling you the people on the ground see the true benefit of the Free SHS and everywhere I go, they are telling me it is the reason they are voting. The apathy, they are few and far isolated cases and even those if you speak to them, they are ready to vote”.
He spoke to Joy News on the sidelines of a walk organized by the candidate as part of campaign activities.
In 2004, the New Patriotic Party won the Ashanti Region with 77 percent of votes cast in the election.
This remains the party's biggest win in the region since 1996, but the NPP is targeting to improve on this performance this year.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua believes the people of the Ashanti Region will stifle development if the electorate exhibits any form of apathy in going to the polls.
“If we fail to vote massively to attain ninety percent turn out with over seventy-five percent votes for the NPP, we won't win the election”, he said.
Election observers say the NPP’s chances of high votes in Ashanti is threatened by high apathy of the electorate to be involved in the polls.
NPP constituency executives and parliamentary candidates have already intensified campaigns in attainment of set targets.
Meanwhile, Nana Awuah has accepted a challenge to outperform the outgoing MP for the constituency, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
“I have always believed in the grace of God. I believe that my path are ordained by God and He will help me attain this feat”, Nana Awuah emphasized.
The walk organised by the Manhyia South Parliamentary Candidate was well attended by constituents.
