A Basic 5 pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School Block “A” is receiving medical care at Damongo St Anne’s Catholic Hospital in the Savannah Region after reportedly being assaulted by his class teacher.

The child’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20, following the marking of a homework exercise.

According to him, the pupil scored 2 out of 8 and was among a group of students allegedly punished for their poor performance.

Mr Mahama explained that the teacher instructed the affected pupils to lie on dual desks in the classroom before allegedly flogging them with a wire cane on their backs and other parts of their bodies.

“My son tried to shield himself with his hand, but the teacher continued to beat him and verbally abused the children because of their low marks,” he said.

The father noted that the child began complaining of severe pain in his hand the following day, Wednesday, January 21.

After home treatment failed to ease the pain, the family took him to Damongo St Anne’s Catholic Hospital, where he was admitted.

Doctors later recommended surgery, which was performed on Tuesday, January 27, at about 10:00 a.m., after the child had been placed on medication.

Mr Mahama further alleged that since the incident, the teacher involved has not visited the child at the hospital. He added that the teacher only visited the family’s home on Sunday, January 25, in the evening, after the child’s mother made contact.

Meanwhile, the headmistress of the school, accompanied by another staff member, has visited the hospital to check on the pupil’s condition.

The father has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure justice is served.

“This is about protecting our innocent future assets,” he stated.
