Bantamahene Baffour Owusu Amankwatia IV has drawn government’s attention to the increasing spate of insecurity in the Ashanti region.
“We in Kumasi have had problems with our environment and security and I am taking this opportunity to bring it to your attention for proper address.
“We are all witnesses to the fact that for three months now we have heard of murders going on in Kumasi mysteriously and so far as we are concern the police who are responsible for our security haven’t talked about it,” he said at the maiden Town Hall Meeting, Tuesday.
This follows the killing of a community nurse, Ruth Aman Eshun at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District over the weekend after her family reported her missing.
According to unconfirmed reports, the young mother of three was ganged raped and gruesomely murdered by unknown assailants.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association with the backing of social media users has already launched a campaign, #Justice4RuthEshun, to demand the arrest and subsequent prosecution of the culprits.
While her murder is the second to be recorded in the region in 2020, not less than five women were killed last year.
Although police have commenced investigations into each of the murders, all remain unsolved.
Responding to the murder, the Bantamahene said, “We know that in the Western democracy when these things happen the police come out to solicit for help and let the citizens see that something is being done but here in Kumasi, we have seen that nothing is being done about it.
“Since October, we have heard nothing from the police so we have assumed they are doing nothing. But once the Vice President is here, we want to bring it to his attention.”
The town hall meeting focused solely on updating Ghanaians on the fulfilment of government’s promises and commitments made ahead of the 2020 elections.
It was held under the theme “Demonstrating fulfilment of our promises.”
Addressing the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, government officials and other appointees at a town hall meeting organised by the Information Ministry, Baffour Amankwatia asked government to step up security in the region within the shortest possible time.
