Former Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has stated that calls to amend the constitution are in order.
According to him, the fact that the constitution includes procedures for amendment is proof that the document was never intended to be static.
He pointed out that many countries around the world regularly review and assess the performance of their constitutions, and make changes as needed to ensure that they remain effective.
"This practice may be worth our consideration in amending our constitution,” he said on Monday, January 8, 2024, while speaking at UPSA during the annual Constitution Day Public Lecture.
Dr Afari-Gyan acknowledged the various proposals for constitutional amendments that have been put forward by individuals and groups, saying “And I also know that a body of officially sponsored recommendations for that purpose exists but I must say that my reflections are without prejudice to any such recommendations.”
“My reflections on the constitution will consist of short statements relating to three issues, the separation of powers between the executive and legislature, the council of state and local government.”
