The Central Region Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has assured customers of the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) of stable water and power supply throughout the Yuletide.
Madam Kesewaa Apenteng-Addo, the Regional Manager, said the Commission had taken proactive measures to ensure that consumers did not celebrate the season without water or power.
Some residents in the Central Region, particularly Cape Coast and its environs, have been grappling with acute water shortage in the past few weeks as taps are not flowing.
They are compelled to walk long distances in search of water with some relying solely on boreholes, mostly salty and difficult to drink or use for laundry.
But speaking at the end-of-year dinner of the Commission in Cape Coast, Madam Apenteng-Addo said consumers should expect a drastic improvement in the situation.
She indicated that the PURC had engaged with the leadership of GWL and ECG in the region and confirmed that they were working frantically to improve water and power situations.
The dinner was attended by various stakeholders of the Commission including GWL, ECG, assembly members, journalists and the tailors association.
Touting some achievements of the Commission in 2024, Madam Apenteng-Addo disclosed that 98 per cent of the more than 900 complaints received by her office had been resolved.
Additionally, the Commission facilitated the payment of more than GHS240,000 to customers who were wrongly billed and helped to retrieve more than two million Cedis of monies owed to ECG and GWL.
She announced that PURC was operating under the theme: “Strategic Positioning” with a resolve to position utility services to ensure a quality and reliable supply of water and electricity in the Central Region.
Mr Seth Atipah, Regional Manager, GWL, however, attributed the recent water challenges to the breakdown of some machine components at the Brimsu Water Treatment Plant caused by power outages.
He, however, assured that they were working to fix the problem for normal water supply to resume within the shortest possible time.
He said the company was committed to serving Ghanaians diligently and urged the public to support them by paying their bills promptly and reporting water thefts.
