Associate Professor at the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof. Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has suggested that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo may be attempting to delay or frustrate the ongoing impeachment proceedings against her.
He made the comments on JoyNews’ *Newsfile* programme on Saturday, 24th May.
While acknowledging the Chief Justice's constitutional right to challenge the process legally, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua expressed concern over the nature and timing of some of her legal actions.
“I think that we all agree that she has a right to ventilate her right,” he noted. “But some of the moves and the suits that have been filed by her, I think, is an attempt to frustrate the process or maybe to delay the process.”
The Chief Justice recently filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain two justices from participating in the inquiry into petitions seeking her removal.
The move has sparked public debate, with critics questioning whether the action is an abuse of legal process or a legitimate exercise of her rights.
Prof. Appiagyei-Atua stated that while the final outcome remains uncertain, the optics of the legal strategy raise serious questions.
“I don’t know what the outcome will be,” he added, “but it does give the impression that the process is being deliberately slowed down.”
