The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has claimed that the DKM Microfinance scandal was part of a smear campaign orchestrated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its Members of Parliament.
During his visit to the Bono Region, where the defunct DKM had branches, Mr Mahama alleged that the owner of the microfinance company is a supporter of the NPP and has backed the Vice President's campaign.
He provided public photos of the two together and referenced comments from former Interior Minister Ambrose Dery as evidence.
The DKM Microfinance scandal caused significant financial losses for thousands of customers, with millions of cedis disappearing after the company's owners engaged in unauthorised investments.
“Recently, the Vice President Bawumia visited Nandom and was seen in the company of the real owner of DKM. The man he was with is, in fact, the true owner.”
“The former Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, later admitted that the owner of DKM is a sympathizer of the NPP and one of the financiers of the Vice President. The lies they spread about me have now been exposed. The owner of DKM is actually affiliated with the NPP.”
Mr Mahama alleged that the embezzled funds are being used to finance Bawumia's campaign.
