The Electoral Commission (EC) has cautioned delegates and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against wearing campaign materials linked to any of the party’s presidential aspirants during its primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31.

The Deputy Director of Research at the EC, Fred Tetteh, issued the warning while speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, stressing that displaying candidate-branded clothing on voting day is a violation of electoral guidelines.

“On election day tomorrow, you can wear your NPP colours. But make sure you are not wearing a T-shirt, a cap, or a trousers, or whatever it is that belongs to any of the five candidates. When you do that, it is an offence against the by-law and the guidelines,” he said.

The contest features former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong.

In all, 211,849 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at 333 polling centres located across the country’s 276 constituencies.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m.

According to Mr Tetteh, active campaigning is not expected on the eve and day of the elections, as stipulated by the rules governing internal party contests.

He explained that while large-scale mobilisation and rallies are prohibited, limited engagement such as house-to-house interactions, is still permissible within the law.

“Today, we are not expecting any of the candidates to be campaigning or amassing people. But obviously, you can be doing house-to-house if you want to,” he added.

The caution comes as the governing NPP prepares to hold its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
