Ecuador has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative, describing it as the “only serious, credible, and realistic” solution to the long-running regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The position was contained in a Joint Communiqué issued in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.
Ecuador also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reiterating its view that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty remains the most viable path to resolving the dispute.
Both countries reaffirmed their support for the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on the Sahara, as well as their ongoing efforts to advance the political process toward a lasting settlement.
The communiqué further stated that Ecuador has decided to extend its consular presence to the Moroccan Sahara, in line with international law.
It also noted Ecuador’s interest in expanding economic and trade cooperation opportunities in the territory, with a view to strengthening investment, trade, and productive development links.
In addition, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister announced that Ecuador’s ambassador to Rabat is expected to visit the Sahara region in the near future to prepare and support new economic initiatives.
