Denmark has endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, describing it as a credible basis for a mutually agreed political solution to the long-running dispute.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, expressed the position on Friday during a visit to Copenhagen by Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita.
Mr Rasmussen said Denmark supports the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, in line with the European Union's position.
“Denmark lauds, in line with the European Union’s position, the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2797.”
He also praised Morocco’s autonomy proposal, describing it as a credible initiative that contributes significantly to the United Nations-led process.
The Danish Foreign Minister said the proposal “brings a serious and essential contribution to the ongoing UN process.”
He further described the autonomy plan as a “good basis for a mutually agreed solution by all parties.”
The position adds Denmark, a member of the UN Security Council, to growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a framework for resolving the Sahara dispute.
According to the statement, Denmark’s position reinforces what Morocco describes as international momentum supporting its sovereignty over the Sahara and the autonomy plan advanced by King Mohammed VI.
