President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says the Association has partnered with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to secure a recovery package for journalists in the country.

Mr Affail Monney said the GH¢20 million package is to support journalists who suffered assaults during the coverage of the elections.

Speaking on Newsfile Saturday, he indicated that the package will be released in bits of "GH¢40 million each month."

He further revealed that about four journalists have been hospitalised following assaults in the just-ended polls.

"One was operated on Friday and three are in a serious condition," he said.

He said the victims will receive a monthly payment of GH¢3000 every month.

Mr Monney further lamented the challenges faced by journalists in the country and said "the degree of injuries sustained during the election period reflects the magnitude of the tasks or challenges journalists go through in covering such elections."

He, however, urged all media practitioners to be unafraid and unintimidated because "this is the cross we have decided to carry and we ought to carry this cross and in the supreme interest of mother Ghana."

He further condemned political actors who constantly accused the media of various irregularities during the election period.

"The least we expect from political actors is commendation and not condemnation," he said.
