The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is setting an ambitious goal to capture 32% of the votes in the Ashanti Region in the upcoming December election.
This is according to Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Wednesday, November 13, he expressed optimism that the NDC will outperform its previous vote shares in the region, which have historically ranged between 28% and 29%.
“We are targeting 32% of votes from the Ashanti Region, and we are confident that we will do better than in previous years. We believe we can cross the 30% mark, and we’re actively working on the ground to make that happen,” he said.
Mr Muntaka explained that the NDC arrived at this target by carefully analyzing its strongholds and understanding both its strengths and weaknesses within the region.
He emphasised that a key focus of their strategy is to prevent electoral malpractice and to motivate NDC supporters to turn out on election day.
"The party has implemented numerous structures aimed at protecting our votes, and our hope is that these efforts will be effective on election day. If all goes well, we might even exceed our target."
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set its own target of securing 85% of the votes in the Ashanti Region, signaling a fierce competition for support in one of Ghana’s most populous voting areas.
However, in response, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Adom Appiah, has doubted the projected figure of the NDC in the Ashanti region.
He says “It is impossible for the NDC to get that figure” in the region which is their stronghold.
