Multi-award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician Diana Hamilton has opened up about her formative years in the health profession, describing her time in nursing school as the pivotal era where her personal and professional lives converged.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews Personality Profile, the 'Adom' hitmaker revealed that her nursing journey was not just a career choice but the foundation of her entire support system.
For Hamilton, the decision to enrol in nursing training was the catalyst for every major relationship in her life today. She affectionately referred to this period as the moment "everything turned" for her.
The ‘Nursing School Trinity’: Love, management, and friendship
While many know her for her soul-stirring vocals and chart-topping hits, few realise that the key pillars of her career were established in the classrooms and wards of her training college.
Hamilton disclosed that she met the three most influential groups of people in her life during her studies.
“That’s where everything turned for me. That’s where I met my Joseph. That’s why I met my manager... I met my husband in nursing school. I met my manager in nursing school. I made my friends in nursing school,” she said.
Memories of Korle-Bu: The gross reality of ward work
Reflecting on her practical experience in Ghana, Hamilton confirmed that she practised at two notable institutions.
However, her time at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana's premier healthcare facility, was filled with both challenges and humorous realisations.
She admitted that as young students, she and her peers were initially repulsed by the more graphic aspects of the job.
“We didn’t like the wound dressing. We didn’t like all the things that made good nurses... You would see the biggest size and the smallest size all the time. It made me wonder whether I had chosen the right job,” she recalled with a laugh.
Despite the initial hesitation and the manic nature of the work, Hamilton noted that she eventually grew to love the profession and developed deep-seated resilience through it.
The Dual Identity: Nurse and Psalmist
Even at the height of her global music success, she has often maintained her dual identity as a Registered Nurse in the United Kingdom. This background in healthcare is frequently credited for the compassion and depth found in her songwriting, particularly her 2024 and 2025 releases, which focus on healing and divine intervention.
Diana Hamilton’s Career by the Numbers:
- 2021: Became the first female gospel artiste to win VGMA Artiste of the Year.
- 2+ Decades: Time spent balancing her medical career with her ministry.
- Millions: Global streams for her anthem 'Adom (Grace)', which remains a staple in Ghanaian worship.
As she prepares for her upcoming 'Awake Experience' concerts in 2026, Hamilton continues to bridge the gap between the physical healing of the wards and the spiritual healing of her music.
The 'Awake Experience' with Diana Hamilton 2026, themed 'Dwell', is coming to Accra on the 15th February at the ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie and Kumasi on the 22nd February at the Church of Pentecost in Bantama.
