Ghana has become one of the first nations to publicly condemn Israel’s military strike on Qatar on September 9—a strike that marks the 100th attack Israel has carried out this year, according to SOHR reports.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, September 10, 2025, it reads, “The Government of the Republic of Ghana has learnt with deep concern the unprovoked Israeli attack on the sovereign State of Qatar, resulting in casualties, loss of lives, and properties. The Government of the Republic of Ghana condemns the attack in view of the fact that the airstrikes constitute a clear violation of international law and an affront to the sovereignty of the State of Qatar. This attack undermines the ongoing pursuit of peace between the States of Palestine and Israel.

His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the People of Ghana stand in solidarity with the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the People of Qatar in these difficult times. We commend Qatar for its tireless and impressive commitment towards the resolution of the conflict between the States of Israel and Palestine and further appeal that this condemnable incident is not allowed to derail Qatar's effort in negotiating a peaceful diplomatic resolution of the conflict”. Global Condemnation Grows

Other countries that have since issued statements condemning the Israeli attack include: Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Iran, Brazil, Norway, and Ireland.

These responses echo a growing concern among the international community regarding what many perceive as disproportionate military actions and rising instability in the Middle East.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

Ghana's condemnation has ignited a passionate argument across social media platforms, especially X (Twitter), with Ghanaians sharply divided on the issue.

An X user, Kwame Ato, stated, “Israel is a terrorist state. No one can convince me otherwise”.

Another X user, Gideon Brown, posted, “So are you even serious at all? This is an insult to we the voters. About 13000 people have been misplaced due to internal conflicts yet none of yall incompetent politicians issued a communique. Now you have the guts to condemn an attack that has nothing to do with your country? Absolutely disgusting”.

Also, Bra_Phile posted “mondwene mo ho” to wit, think about yourself.

“It’s reassuring to see Ghana taking a firm and principled stance on this issue. Condemning unprovoked attacks and standing in solidarity with Qatar sends a strong message that diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for international law must remain at the forefront of global relations. President Mahama’s outreach shows leadership rooted in humanity, justice, and the pursuit of peace," posted by Nsisong.

A Global Citizen

While some critics argue that Ghana should refrain from intervening in international affairs, I will present my argument for Ghana’s obligations and rights as a signatory to global diplomatic frameworks.

According to Article 1(3) of the United Nations Charter, of which Ghana is a signatory:

“To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all…”

This charter not only legitimises Ghana’s participation in global affairs but also mandates it to promote peace, justice, and human dignity — values at the heart of the current condemnation.

Realism at the Helm

Under President John Dramani Mahama’s second administration, Ghana has adopted a more assertive and pragmatic approach to international relations. As an International Relations and Diplomacy student, I see Mahama’s leadership as grounded in realist diplomacy, a school of thought that prioritises national interest, calculated power, and fearless engagement with global issues.

 From my standpoint, Mahama embodies the realist leader — not just observing but engaging, knowing that power is best used when it supports peace and justice.

Conclusion

Ghana’s condemnation of Israel’s strike on Qatar signals more than a diplomatic stance — it reflects a broader commitment to justice, sovereignty, and peace. As a recognised global citizen and active player on the international stage, Ghana continues to demonstrate that silence is not an option in the face of escalating global conflict.
