The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Armah Kofi Buah, says the ministry is working tirelessly to ensure that the GoldBoard sources gold solely from legitimate and legal mining operations.
Responding to a question from Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba during the Government’s Accountability Series on Wednesday, the Minister noted that measures are being implemented to prevent the infiltration of illegally mined gold into the formal supply chain.
Mr Buah disclosed that the Ministry is working closely with stakeholders to establish mini-refinery plants in selected mining communities. These facilities, he said, would enhance traceability and guarantee that gold exported by the Board originates from transparent and lawful sources.
"I think all the things I have talked about are to make sure there is transparent sourcing of gold. We are now going to have all sorts of support, especially with a refinery, mini-refinery in every place where we have cooperative mining. What does that it that this gold, when exported, the world will be assured they know this gold is from legitimate, legal sources."
"So we are doing everything, working in collaboration with the GoldBod to ensure that these golds that we are sending out are actually coming from legal and sustainable sources," he added.
Recently, some sections of the public questioned the GoldBoard on how it manages to procure and sell gold abroad, and how it ensures that it does not purchase gold from illegal small-scale miners.
