Asante Kotoko have relinquished their top spot in the Ghana Premier League after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Porcupines sought to return to winning ways after drawing with Bechem United in order to extend their lead.
But Lions, who had been threatened by relegation all season, had other ideas.
Gildas Jacob reacted quickly to a strike that hit the post, slotting the ball in to give Lions the advantage just before the 20th-minute mark.
The Lions doubled their advantage following a devastating four-on-two counterattack, which was finished by Yao Sopkoli five minutes before half-time.
David Akintunde put the icing on the cake, surging into the 18-yard box to strike home.
Kwame Opoku's attempt to reduce the deficit was denied by a crucial save from goalkeeper Daniel Afful.
Kotoko, who have suffered their heaviest defeat of the season, sit third with 47 points and hope to bounce back against second-placed Nations FC.
Meanwhile, the victory is a real shot in the arm for Accra Lions in their attempt to avoid relegation, as they sit 14th on 29 points.
They face Heart of Lions in their next encounter at the Kpando Sports Stadium.
