The Ministry for the Interior has urged individuals in possession of illegal firearms to take advantage of the gun amnesty currently underway and voluntarily surrender their weapons before the January 15 deadline.

According to the Ministry, anyone who surrenders an illegal weapon within the amnesty period will go scot-free, but warned that offenders after the deadline will face arrest and prosecution, as there is going to be an intensified operation to retrieve all illegal guns in Ghana.

In a Christmas message, the sector minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, said the guns can be voluntarily submitted at any police station within the stipulated period.

According to the minister, the amnesty initiative is aimed at significantly reducing the number of illegal arms in circulation, thereby enhancing public safety, national security, and social cohesion. He stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace and security.

Delivering his Christmas message, the Interior Minister called on citizens to actively support efforts to preserve the country’s peace, noting that the amnesty offers a lawful opportunity for individuals to dispose of illegal weapons without fear of prosecution.

“As you may be aware, the Ministry of the Interior has declared a gun amnesty aimed at reducing illegal arms in the country. I want to use this opportunity to encourage those who have illegal arms to surrender them at any police station by January 15, 2026. After the deadline, we will arrest and prosecute,” he stated.

He further assured the public that the nation’s security agencies remain fully prepared and are working tirelessly to protect lives and property before, during, and after the festive season.
