Former Ghana Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr Tony Aidoo, has stated that he never anticipated a day when Ghanaians would have a president who is fascist.
He compared President Akufo-Addo to Adolf Hitler, stating that while Hitler’s fascism was based on a sense of nationalism, Akufo-Addo lacked any national orientation.
In an exclusive interview with Joy News, Dr Aidoo described Akufo-Addo’s leadership as tribalistic fascism, which he believes has been evident throughout the past eight years.
“We have seen it; we have seen it destroying every bit of our constitutional bodies that we set up, and that is why we, the members of the Consultative Assembly, made a mistake in having the belief that we wouldn’t have a president who would abuse the prerogative that we have given him under the constitution,” he said.
He also suggested that citizens need constitutional amendments, particularly concerning the provisions that give the president the power to hire and fire. “There is a need, and there is nothing wrong with the constitution,” he added.
Dr Aidoo said, “Adolf Hitler was imbued with a sense of nationalism in his fascism. Under what philosophy is Akufo-Addo operating with the current state of fascist rule? He is not imbued with any sense of nationalism.”
He mentioned, “One thing that worries me about the Fourth Republic is that patronage has been carried to the most ridiculous level.”
He noted that a paramount chief begs the president for development projects and then thanks him for having done the roads, even though it is the chief’s own money, not the country’s.
“Why should you go and beg him? Why should you thank him for doing your road, which is his mandate? We have allowed this patronage system to fester for eight years,” he remarked.
Dr Aidoo also commented that, “Former President John Agyekum Kufuor is one of the people who started the infiltration of the civil service by planting so-called special advisers. Did you see or hear Rawlings appointing party people to constitutional bodies?”
He continued, “Rawlings heard that his uncle was the CEO of the Public Procurement Authority; he got him to resign. That was an example of a good democrat.”
Dr Aidoo concluded, “Not a Democrat who wants to destroy every foundation we have put up. How does his actions relate to the rhetoric of being a champion of the rule of law?”
