The Director-General of the Ghana Technical Vocational Education and Training Service, Mawusi Nudekor Awity says she is the first Ghanaian to introduce ladies to professional driving.
Before her position as the TVET Director-General, she founded a non-governmental organisation (NGO), where she trained females in different vocational fields.
One of the skills included professional driving for females, during which she trained some who are currently making ends meet through driving. This has earned her the honour of being the first to introduce such an initiative.
She revealed this in an interview on Joy Prime’s morning show with Roselyn Felli.
"My space as the founder and former Executive Director of Network of Women in Growth (NEWIG), I was the first person to introduce ladies to professional driving. So many of the Ayalolo female drivers were people that my NGO trained," she disclosed on Wednesday.
Her organisation, according to her, also initiated building construction where young women were trained in craftmanship, which she calls ‘craftwomanship,' as well as electrical.
She believes that her passion and experience with people has helped her perform her duties and has made it easier for her to involve more females in male-dominated TVET sectors.
According to her, the purpose of training more people in vocational skills is to enable them to create their own employment instead of being jobless.
"The idea is to let people set up their own businesses so that they can also employ others."
Meanwhile, over 50, 000 students have been enrolled in TVET schools across the country this year.
She commended the government for allocating funds for the establishment and modernization of the TVET sector to facilitate the free flow of training.
