The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has condemned the police for allegedly shooting some youth in Bawku on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
In a press release, Mr Ayariga distanced himself from the actions of the police.
"I totally condemn the actions of the police in shooting some youth in Bawku today," the statement read.
This follows a period of heightened tension in Bawku, driven by recurring violence, insecurity, and the alleged shooting of some individuals.
He further clarified that "he has never directed the police to allow or prevent anyone from attending markets or purchasing anything from anyone."
According to him, such matters are strictly the responsibility of the security agencies and not within his authority as a Member of Parliament.
"They are matters within the purview of law enforcement officers, and no decision of a law enforcement officer should be blamed on me because I don't control them operationally," he asserted.
He advised the police to work closely with the Paramount Chief of Kusaug, Zugraan Abugrago Azoka II, in maintaining peace and order in" his traditional area."
